The Tacoma-Pierce County Volleyball Officials Board (TPCVOB) was established to serve all levels of volleyball in the Tacoma-Pierce County region with qualified officials.
The primary role of the official is assuring equal opportunity and fair play for all participants. The official must establish the best atmosphere for fair competition with the attention focused on the athletes rather than the official.
To meet these responsibilities, an official must exhibit the knowledge and professionalism required to do the job. This means thoroughly understanding volleyball strategy and skills, officiating techniques and the rules. Officials must be flexible and operate within the standards appropriate to the age of the athletes, level of skill and available playing facilities. It is imperative that officials study the rules religiously, review rule interpretations that are distributed throughout the season, remain current by attending clinics and accept constructive criticism from observers, assigners, coaches and fellow officials.
It is important to remember that officials also serve as a role model to young people. Officials must never behave with bias nor allow coaches, players or spectators to influence judgment. Officials should remain cordial yet with a reserved demeanor toward all participants, regardless of prior acquaintances and friendships. Although officials receive a fee, the ultimate goal should be the knowledge that they have rendered a valuable service to the sport of volleyball.
