August 19 @ 5:30 pm - 8:00 pm

TPCVOB Presents - Earn and Learn! with Joan Powell

Joan Powell will be joining us on Fri., August 19th to kick off the season with a variety of topics that we can all benefit from regardless of the type of match we are officiating.  Dinner will be served starting at 5:30pm with the presentations scheduled to start at 6:15pm. The above flyer outlines the location, menu, cost to attend and the registration process and deadline.

One of the most dynamic speakers in the country, Joan has made a profound impact on volleyball officiating for decades. During her 40-plus years as an on-court official, Powell officiated NCAA championships at all three levels. She officiated nine NCAA Division I National Championships, three NCAA Division II championships, one NCAA Division III championship and both the NJCAA championship and NAIA championship.

In recognition of her significant contributions, Joan will receive the 2022 Gold Whistle Award, the highest honor in officiating, presented by NASO, during the Celebrate Officiating Gala, at the Sports Officiating Summit this August.

Joan’s newest gig is serving as Coordinator of Officials for the Women’s Volleyball Western Consortium (W5), the first-ever NCAA Division I officiating consortium specifically for women’s volleyball. The five conferences (Big West, Big Sky, Mountain West, Pac-12 and WCC) will collaborate on all women’s volleyball officiating matters including recruitment, training, scheduling and evaluation of game officials. Joan will have the lead responsibility for the Big West, Mountain West and Pac-12 officials.

  • Presentation Topics:
    • Coach/R2 interaction:
      • Partner/crew protection.
        • “How can you support your partner even though you really don’t agree with their call, including line judges?
        • When/how to interact with a coach who is a complainer.
    • Value and importance of pre-match discussion even when you work with the same people several times during the season.
    • How to lead a productive post-match discussion:
      • What are the specific questions we should ask during the debrief?
      • What is the order of progression? i.e. crew, scorer & assistant scorer, line judges, R2
      • Stay in your lane?
    • Match management:
      • What does that mean?
      • How do we facilitate?
      • What does it take to manage a match?

Seating is limited so don’t wait until the last minute to register because you most likely won’t get in.

P.S.—by attending you earn a meeting make-up in case there is a meeting during the regular season that you cannot make.
